If you’re planning a southern California beach wedding, you’re in the right place. After 29 years officiating ceremonies up and down this coastline, I know these beaches like the back of my hand. These four locations are stunning, accessible, and completely free — perfect for elopements or intimate weddings with 10-15 guests. Let me walk you through each one.

Southern California Beach Wedding Locations

1. El Matador State Beach, Malibu

El Matador is one of the most dramatic and photographed southern California beach wedding locations I know. Jagged cliffs, hidden sea caves, unique rock formations, and pockets of soft sand — it’s a setting that makes every photo look like a magazine cover.

One important thing to know before you commit: getting there requires descending a steep, narrow wooden staircase carved into the bluff. It’s a real hike down — and coming back up is even tougher. I’ve done it dozens of times and still feel it in my legs afterward. If anyone in your group has mobility issues, this may not be the right choice.

That said — it’s absolutely worth it for the right couple.

Pros: Stunning natural beauty, sea caves, rock formations, intimate setting Cons: Steep staircase access, not suitable for mobility issues, can get crowded by mid-morning Pro Tip: Go early — 7 or 8 AM. By 10 AM the crowds arrive. First light at El Matador is something you’ll never forget.

2. El Pescador State Beach, Malibu

El Pescador is El Matador’s quieter, less famous neighbor — and I love it for exactly that reason. Same dramatic coastline, same beautiful rock formations and tide pools, but fewer people and a more spacious feel. It’s my go-to recommendation for couples who want El Matador’s beauty without the crowds.

Fair warning: El Pescador has the same steep staircase situation as El Matador. Know what you’re getting into before you commit.

Pros: Peaceful, spacious, scenic, great for photography Cons: Steep staircase access, can be windy Pro Tip: If the hike doesn’t fit your group, Point Dume gives you equally stunning southern California beach wedding views with parking right at the ceremony spot.

3. Point Dume State Beach, Malibu

Point Dume is my pick for couples who want dramatic views without the physical demands of El Matador or El Pescador. There’s a parking lot right at the trailhead — ceremony spots are literally steps from your car.

You have two options: get married on the beach itself, or take the path up to the bluffs above for panoramic views of the entire coastline. I’ve done both and they’re both spectacular. I once officiated a southern California beach wedding on that bluff where a pod of dolphins surfaced right as I pronounced the couple married. I’m not making that up.

Fun fact: Point Dume is where the famous final scene of the original Planet of the Apes was filmed. Your guests will appreciate the trivia.

Pros: Easy access, parking lot nearby, beach and bluff options, stunning views Cons: Can be windy on the bluff, busy on weekends Pro Tip: Weekday mornings are ideal. The bluff at sunrise is one of the most breathtaking southern California beach wedding ceremony locations you’ll find anywhere.

4. Serra Cross Park, Ventura

Serra Cross is the only non-Malibu location on this list — and it earns its spot. Perched high above the city of Ventura, this park gives you a sweeping 360-degree view that includes downtown Ventura, the pier, the Santa Barbara Channel, and the Anacapa Islands. A 20-foot wooden cross sits atop a concrete stage that doubles as a natural altar.

I’ve officiated several ceremonies here and it never gets old. The view is genuinely breathtaking — and unlike the beaches, there are no stairs, no sand, and plenty of parking.

Pros: Panoramic views, easy access, ample parking, romantic setting Cons: Can get busy on weekends Pro Tip: Weekday mornings are quieter and the light is beautiful for photos. For permit information and park details, visit the City of Ventura Parks website.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind for Your Southern California Beach Wedding

Before you pick your southern California beach wedding spot, here are a few practical things worth knowing:

Weather — Southern California weather is generally forgiving, but coastal wind and marine layer fog are real. Have a backup plan.

Tides — Check the tide tables before you set your ceremony time. High tide can significantly reduce usable beach space.

Parking — All four locations have parking, but it fills up fast on weekends. Plan accordingly or arrange a rideshare drop-off.

Footwear — Skip the heels. Comfortable sandals or bare feet are the right call for a beach ceremony.

Photography — Hire someone who knows how to shoot in natural coastal light. The settings are stunning — you want a photographer who can capture them.
