If you’re ready to elope in Santa Barbara, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re dreaming of a beautiful, simple wedding without all the stress, Santa Barbara might just be your perfect answer. It’s one of the most romantic cities in California — maybe the world —, and it’s genuinely one of the best places to elope in Santa Barbara style: beautiful, simple, and stress-free. The Mediterranean climate keeps things gorgeous year-round, the scenery practically does all the work for you, and you can fly in from just about anywhere. This guide walks you through everything: getting your marriage license, picking the perfect spot, finding a great officiant, and making your elopement day completely your own.
Step 1: Get Your Santa Barbara Marriage License
Here’s a little secret that makes eloping in Santa Barbara so easy: the Santa Barbara County Courthouse accepts walk-in marriage license appointments. That means you can get your license and get married on the very same day. No waiting, no stress.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Both of you need to show up in person with a valid government-issued photo ID
- California has no waiting period — your license is valid the moment you get it
- Your license is good for 90 days, so you have plenty of flexibility
- The fee is around $115 (cash or card both work)
- You’ll go to the Santa Barbara County Clerk’s Office at 1100 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101
Simple as that. Show up, grab your license, and go say your vows.
Step 2: Best Places to Elope in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is full of stunning spots for an elopement ceremony. Here are some of my personal favorites:
East Beach — This is Santa Barbara’s most iconic stretch of coastline, and for good reason. With the Santa Ynez Mountains rising behind you and the Pacific stretched out in front, it’s breathtaking at any time of day. Sunrise and sunset ceremonies here are absolutely unforgettable.
Santa Barbara Courthouse Grounds — I’ve performed more weddings here than I can count, and it never gets old. The Courthouse property is genuinely one of the most beautiful and versatile wedding locations in all of California — and here’s something most couples don’t realize: for elopers and very small weddings, the Courthouse grounds are completely free. You can wander the property, find your favorite scenic spot, and get married right there at no cost. No permit, no reservation, no fuss. If you’re planning a larger ceremony in a specific area like the Sunken Gardens, you’ll want to make a reservation in advance — but for an intimate elopement, the whole grounds are yours to explore.
A few specific spots worth knowing about:
- The Sunken Gardens — The iconic, lush courtyard that everyone pictures when they think of the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Stunning for photos, and free for small ceremonies.
- The Mural Room — Inside the Courthouse itself, the Mural Room is a popular and beautiful spot for ceremonies. It has a historic, elegant feel that’s unlike anything else in the city.
- And honestly, there are scenic corners all over the property — archways, gardens, and ocean-view terraces — that make for incredible ceremony backdrops. Half the fun is finding your spot.
Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry’s Beach) — If you want something a little more private and away from the tourist crowds, this is the spot. It’s a local favorite for a reason — peaceful, beautiful, and perfect for an intimate ceremony.
Chase Palm Park — A gorgeous coastal park right along Cabrillo Boulevard, just steps from the water. Easy to get to, beautiful scenery, and a relaxed vibe.
Elings Park — For elevated views of the ocean and the city spread out below you, Elings Park is hard to beat. It’s dramatic in the best possible way.
Step 3: Hire a Santa Barbara Wedding Officiant
California law requires a licensed officiant to sign your marriage license — but beyond the legal requirement, having the right officiant can make all the difference in how personal and meaningful your ceremony feels.
For a Santa Barbara elopement, you want someone who:
- Is licensed in California
- Is comfortable with intimate, two-person ceremonies
- Knows the locations and logistics
- Will craft something meaningful — not just recite generic vows

Step 4: Plan Your Perfect Santa Barbara Elopement Day
A few things I’ve learned after 28 years of officiating elopements in Santa Barbara:
Best time of year: October is the sweet spot. The weather is reliably beautiful, the tourist crowds have thinned out, and the golden-hour light in October is something special. That said, Santa Barbara’s weather is good most of the year, so don’t let the calendar hold you back.
Best time of day: Either sunrise or the last 90 minutes before sunset — what photographers call “golden hour.” The light is warm, soft, and absolutely gorgeous for photos.
Permits: Most small elopements under 8 people don’t require a permit, but it’s worth checking with Santa Barbara City Parks at sbparks.org before your day to be sure.
Don’t skip the photographer: Even for a two-person elopement, booking a photographer for just 1–2 hours is worth every penny. Santa Barbara has excellent photographers who specialize in intimate ceremonies, and you’ll be so glad you have those photos. Or inquire about my sce
