Dean Merrill Weddings
“As a wedding officiant Santa Barbara couples have trusted for 29 years, I can tell you without hesitation — this is the most beautiful wedding city in the world. From surprise vow renewals at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara to spontaneous elopements at the Santa Barbara Courthouse, from oceanfront ceremonies at Cabrillo Pavilion to elegant celebrations at the Four Seasons Biltmore — I’ve had the privilege of officiating it all. My background in motivational speaking, ministry, and professional writing means every ceremony I write is completely unique to you. I’m the preferred officiant for Bella Vita Events, Southern California’s #1 rated wedding coordinator. Call or text me at (805) 300-4955) — I’d love to be part of your Santa Barbara wedding.”
The Benefits of Customized Ceremonies
No two couples are alike — and after 29 years of doing this, I can tell you that the ceremonies that mean the most are the ones that actually sound like the people standing in them. Before I write a single word of your ceremony, I want to know your story. How you met. What makes you laugh. What you’ve been through together. That’s what goes into the ceremony — not a template, not a script pulled from a file, but something written specifically for you. I’ve officiated intimate elopements on the sand at Santa Barbara’s beaches and grand celebrations at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara and Four Seasons Biltmore. The size doesn’t matter. The personalization always does.
As a trusted wedding officiant Santa Barbara couples rely on, I’ve been performing ceremonies in this city for 29 years and I still get excited every single time I drive up the 101 and see those mountains meeting the ocean. Santa Barbara is genuinely unlike anywhere else. The climate, the scenery, the venues, the energy — it all comes together in a way that makes every wedding feel like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Because it is.
What I bring to every ceremony here is something most officiants simply don’t offer. My background as a motivational speaker, minister, and professional writer means I don’t show up with a template. I sit with every couple for about an hour, ask questions, listen to your story, and then write a ceremony from scratch that is completely and uniquely yours.
If you’re looking for a wedding officiant Santa Barbara has to offer, I’d love to connect. Call or text me at (805) 300-4955.
Officiating Religious and Secular Weddings
My background is in Christian ministry, but over 29 years I’ve officiated ceremonies for couples of every faith and background — Christian, Jewish, interfaith, and couples with no religious affiliation at all. Most couples I work with in Santa Barbara fall somewhere in the middle. They have values and beliefs but they don’t want a church service. They want something meaningful without feeling like a religious lecture. That’s exactly what I do. I’ll incorporate as much or as little faith as feels right for you — handled with genuine respect for who you are and what you believe.
5 Reasons to Get Married in Santa Barbara
1. Awe-Inspiring Scenery
From the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse and the blufftop grandeur of the Ritz-Carlton Bacara to world-class beaches and stunning wine country, Santa Barbara is a once-in-a-lifetime backdrop for your wedding day. After 29 years of officiating here I still find myself stopping to take it all in. There is simply nowhere else like it.
2. The Most Temperate Climate in the World
Santa Barbara offers arguably the most perfect weather of any city on earth — making it ideal for weddings in any month of the year. I have officiated ceremonies here in January and December without a single weather issue. That said, if you ask me for my personal recommendation? October. The summer crowds have thinned, the kids are back in school, and the weather is absolutely perfect. It’s the sweet spot.
3. Easy Accessibility
Your guests will feel like they’re on vacation the moment they arrive. Santa Barbara is accessible by car, train, or plane — and the airport has grown tremendously over the last decade, now serving over 1.27 million passengers annually. It’s become a preferred alternative to LAX for travelers from across the country. Getting here is easy. Leaving is the hard part.
4. World-Class Vendors
Because Santa Barbara hosts magnificent weddings year-round, you’ll have access to some of the finest wedding vendors in all of Southern California — photographers, florists, caterers, coordinators — all competing to deliver their absolute best. My advice: don’t just look at their work. Look for passion. The vendors who truly love what they do are the ones who make your day unforgettable.
5. Free and Budget-Friendly Options
Here’s one of my favorite things about Santa Barbara — you can have a stunning, meaningful wedding here for almost nothing. The Santa Barbara Courthouse grounds are one of the most beautiful settings in California, and if you keep your group small and find your own private spot on the grounds, it costs you nothing. For larger groups a permit is required, but it’s very affordable. Or simply find a secluded stretch of beach, gather your closest people, and let’s get married. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make a memory that lasts a lifetime.

My Experience
29 years ago I became a licensed wedding officiant with one mission: to make every ceremony 100% tailored to the personalities and uniqueness of the couple standing in front of me. No templates. No recycled words. Your wedding can be meaningful, memorable, creative, and fun. This is all about celebration!
The Locations
Southern California is one of the most beautiful and sought-after areas for weddings in the entire country, and I’m proud to call it home. I officiate everywhere from large destination weddings to intimate beach elopements and courthouse ceremonies across Santa Barbara County and beyond. Need your marriage license? The Santa Barbara County Clerk-Recorder has everything you need.
You!
No two couples are the same, which means no two ceremonies I write are the same. My responsibility is to understand your vision — 100% about your dreams, your story, your personalities. I will take the time to weave every wonderful detail into a ceremony that is completely and uniquely yours.
Wedding Venues in Santa Barbara, CA
Santa Barbara has a venue for every couple, every style, and every budget. Here are some of my favorites after nearly three decades of officiating here.
Ritz-Carlton Bacara
The Ritz-Carlton Bacara is one of my favorite wedding venues in all of Southern California — and I mean that without any exaggeration. The lobby alone, with its breathtaking marble floors, is so stunning that I’ve joked more than once that when you pass from this world the first place you’ll check into is the lobby at the Bacara. It’s that beautiful.
My most memorable moment there came during a surprise vow renewal I was asked to perform. It was the husband who called me — not the bride — which was unusual right from the start. He had arranged everything: the hotel, the beautiful oceanfront patio, and me. His wife of 20 years had no idea. When I walked out from the restaurant in my black suit and black tie, she looked at me with a completely blank expression — she thought I was the maître d’. When her husband finally told her who I was and why I was there, she went completely speechless. And then the tears came. Watching him tell her how much he loved her and how important it was to him to mark 20 years together in that moment — that’s the kind of thing that reminds you why this work matters.
Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens
The Santa Barbara Courthouse is one of the most iconic and photographed wedding locations in all of California. It’s where I’ve officiated more elopements than I can count — and where one of the funniest moments of my 29-year career happened.
I had just finished a ceremony at the Sunken Gardens and was walking back across the grounds to drop off the marriage license at the County Clerk’s office. A young couple came running across the grass toward me. “Are you a wedding officiant?” they asked, slightly out of breath. I said yes. “We have our license — will you marry us right now?” I asked them a few questions, liked what I heard, and said sure. One hour. Two ceremonies. That had never happened before in my career and it hasn’t happened since.
The Courthouse is also one of Santa Barbara’s best kept secrets for budget-conscious couples. You can actually get married here for free — just find a private, secluded spot on the beautiful grounds and gather your closest people. For larger groups, permits are available and very reasonably priced. And as a bonus — the County Clerk’s office here is one of the only ones in California that accepts walk-ins for marriage licenses, which is perfect for spontaneous elopements.
Cabrillo Pavilion
If you’re dreaming of an oceanfront wedding that puts you literally steps from the sand and the water, Cabrillo Pavilion is your venue. This premier oceanfront property sits right on East Beach with direct public access to the shoreline and a beautiful upper-level event room overlooking the Pacific. I’ve officiated weddings here with over 150 guests — it handles a substantial celebration beautifully while never losing that intimate connection to the ocean.
Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara
The Four Seasons Biltmore is everything you’d expect from one of the most iconic hotels in California. A stunning Spanish Colonial estate set between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, it offers ceremony and reception spaces that are nothing short of magnificent. Refined, romantic, and timeless — it’s the kind of venue where every detail feels intentional and every photo looks like it belongs in a magazine.
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
For couples who want natural beauty without the ocean backdrop, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is a hidden gem. Lush native plantings, winding paths, and intimate garden spaces create a setting that feels private and deeply personal. It’s one of those venues that photographs beautifully in every season.
The Santa Barbara Bowl
The Santa Barbara Bowl isn’t a wedding venue — but if you’re staying in Santa Barbara for your wedding weekend, I’d highly recommend checking who’s performing there during your visit. It’s one of the most intimate outdoor concert venues in the country, nestled into the hillside with incredible acoustics and a magical atmosphere. I saw James Taylor perform there and it was one of the best concert experiences of my life. Your guests will thank you for the tip.
Your Personalized Wedding Minister
in Santa Barbara, CA
“Finding the right officiant is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your wedding. I don’t take that lightly. Every couple I work with gets my full attention — from our first phone call to the moment I pronounce you married.
I spend about an hour in a personal interview with every couple before I write a single word of your ceremony. I want to know how you met, what makes your partner laugh, what your families mean to you, and what you want the people in those seats to walk away feeling. That’s the foundation of everything I write.
Beyond officiating, I’m deeply connected throughout the Santa Barbara wedding community. I’m happy to point you toward photographers, coordinators, florists, and other vendors I trust. “My husband and I very easily decided to select Dean Merrill as our officiant after our first call with him inquiring about his services. We decided to proceed with his Personal package which led to a detailed and fun phone meeting with the three of us as he got to know us and to prepare for the ceremony. The day of our wedding Dean found is way to each of us prior to the ceremony to introduce himself in person and check in to see how we were doing before our big moment. Dean gladly joined my very close family and friends and I in a prayer to help guide us through the big day. During the ceremony Dean was calm and confident and very warm as he spoke about my husband and I. The ceremony was nothing but perfect. He did an amazing job sharing our stories and our love for each other to our friends and family. It has been two weeks since we were married and we still are receiving comments about how amazing and touching the ceremony was. I wish I could give him 100 stars if it were possible!”
Frequently Asked Questions
I am always available to answer specific questions or concerns. Weddings tend to bring up some common worries, so here are some of the ones I hear most often:
Will You Process our Marriage License?
I offer license processing in both my simple and personal wedding packages. All you have to do is apply and bring your license to the ceremony, where I’ll handle all of the necessary signatures. From there, I’ll mail it to the county clerk’s office within 24 hours of your big day, and you’ll get it back in one to eight weeks.
Do You Officiate Small Weddings?
I have tackled weddings of every imaginable size and given my all to each of them. I’m ready to design the ceremony that fits your needs, no matter how many people will be in attendance.
Can My Children Join in the Ceremony
Of course! I’ll gladly incorporate your immediate (or extended) family into the ceremony. The bottom line is that I want to do whatever will make you and your loved ones feel special on the big day, making it truly unforgettable for everyone in attendance.
